What does your zip code say about you?
If you live in my zip code, 37067, which is in Franklin, TN, you are probably an Urban Chicster, a Savvy Suburbanite, or a Soccer Mom. At least that’s what we’re told by the Zip Lookup Tool from Esri, an interesting site that allows you to click on a map and get a breakdown of the types of people who call that area home.
What if you live a little closer to Nashville, say, in the 37215 zip code – more commonly known as the Forest Hills/Green Hills area? Then you probably belong to what is called the Top Tier demographic, the Golden Years set, or the Emerald City crowd.
Not just for Nashville and Middle Tennessee
The Zip Lookup Tool isn’t just for the Nashville/Franklin area, of course. You can use it to mine demographic information from any part of the country. (Try looking up your home town). While some may cry afoul when it comes to offering up gross generalizations about certain segments of the population, I think you will find that Zip Lookup Tool is surprisingly, and in some cases, eerily, accurate.
My favorite part about the site is the detailed and often entertaining breakdowns of the various demographic segments. Here’s one for Smyrna (37617).
Before we go, let’s check in on one of my favorite areas: East Nashville, zip code 37206. Again, there many exceptions to the rule, but this gives you a fairly interesting “big picture” look at the types of peeps living in our neighborhoods.
Here are a few other areas with their accompanying demographic profiles. See if these gel with the type of person you think of when you think of that part of town.
- Franklin (37064): Professional Pride, Savvy Suburbanites, Bright Young Professionals
- Goodlettsville (37072): Front Porches, Salt of the Earth, Green Acres
- Hendersonville (37075): Savvy Suburbanites, Middleburg, Bright Young Professionals
- Brentwood (37027): Top Tier, Professional Pride, Exurbanites
- Antioch (37013): Young and Restless, Up and Coming Families, American Dreamers
- 12th Ave S (37204): Emerald City, In Style, Urban Chic
- Sylvan Park (37209): Family Foundations, Midlife Constants, Modest Income Homes
You can also get some other insightful demographic information by clicking on the Income, Age, and Population Density tabs. But the most fun to be had is playing around with the Top Tapestry Segments. Here is the link to the Zip Lookup Tool once again.
